A new report by Amnesty International finds that the Trump administration has separated far more immigrant families than it has publicly admitted. Amnesty reports that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) forcibly separated more than 6,000 family units between mid-April and mid-August under the White House’s “zero tolerance” policy. That number, it says, “excluded countless other families whose separations were not recorded.”

Drawing on data from the past two years, Amnesty also reports that the Trump administration separated an additional 1,800 family units before April. In total, it concludes that approximately 8,000 family units have been torn apart after crossing the US-Mexico border.

It is not clear how many people this affected; “family unit” may refer to individual members of a family or an entire family. It was previously thought that 2,600 children had been taken from their parents; Amnesty’s data suggest the actual number could be much higher. Many members of the separated families were sent to detention centers or deported without being reunited with their loved ones..

The eight-term congressman, up for re-election next month, talked to Caroline Sommerfeld of the Austrian far-right propaganda site Unzensuriert (which means “uncensored” in English). Sommerfeld is a prominent intellectual in Europe’s neo-fascist identitarian movement, which has deep connections to America’s so-called alt-right. The interview, published in September, came to HuffPost’s attention this week. In his conversation with Sommerfeld, King discussed his belief in the superiority of European culture over others. He talked fearfully of falling fertility rates in the West and spoke at length about his belief that Europe and America are threatened by Muslim and Latino immigration. “If we don’t defend Western civilization, then we will become subjugated by the people who are the enemies of faith, the enemies of justice,” King said.

The interview is remarkable, capturing a sitting U.S. congressman completely fluent in modern white nationalist talking points just weeks before an election he is favored to win. “This interview reveals a whole new level of reality underneath this guy’s politics,” said Roger Griffin, an expert on fascism and modern history at Oxford Brookes University. King never would have opened up that way with mainstream reporters, since they wouldn’t understand what he was talking about, Griffin said. He added, “But with her, who is obviously steeped in this stuff, he just opens up because he knows he’s going to be understood.”

Reproductive rights have long been an issue in El Salvador, where a current case highlights the alarming direction of abortion rights in Latin America. Imelda Cortez, 20, had been repeatedly raped by her stepfather, Pablo Henriquez, between the ages of 12 and 18. In April 2017, she started suffering abdominal cramps and felt a pressure in her uterus as she began to bleed profusely before she lost consciousness. Cortez, who lives in La Paz, was taken to the hospital by her mother and a neighbor, where the medical staff determined that Cortez had aborted a pregnancy, which is a crime in El Salvador. Patients are being incarcerated for do-it-yourself abortions. These lawyers want to change that. In fact, the country has imposed a total ban on abortions since 1998, no exceptions. It is one of 26 countries in the world with such strict regulations. El Salvador prosecutes those even suspected of having an abortion. This means that people like Cortez, who are seeking obstetric treatment, might have to somehow prove that they have not terminated a pregnancy at any point. Even if a patient has suffered a miscarriage or a stillbirth, they can still be charged with a crime. Cortez was reported to the police, despite the fact that she had, in fact, given birth prematurely at home that day (to her stepfather’s child, as proven later by a DNA test). And that baby was home, safe, and very much alive.

According to Paula Avila-Guillen, a human rights legal expert and the Director of Latin America Initiatives for the Women’s Equality Center who is in touch with Cortez’s attorney (ThinkProgress was unable to reach her directly), Cortez was almost eight months pregnant but might not have been fully aware of it. A few months before this, a doctor had determined that she had a sexually transmitted infection and was anemic. The doctor refused to give her treatment for either, telling Imelda and her mother that she was pregnant. But the stepfather convinced Imelda’s mom that it was a lie, claiming he was sterile. He then continued to rape Cortez while she was pregnant and ill. Despite the lack of any evidence showing that Cortez ever attempted to end the pregnancy or harm her baby after it was born, she remains incarcerated and facing a charge of aggravated homicide.

But what would it look like, health-wise, in this country to make abortions totally illegal? “The number of abortions aren’t actually reduced, what is increased is the number of unsafe abortions and the number of maternal mortalities related to abortion,” she said. “That is a fact all over Latin America and even some countries in Europe.” In some countries, such as El Salvador, the total ban includes prosecuting those who are even suspected of having abortions. That means people who seek obstetric treatment and are suspected of having had an abortion will have to actually prove that they did not terminate the pregnancy. Those who have access to resources and money can get their abortion, whereas the poor die as they only have access to unsafe abortions, she said.

A seven-year-old girl from Guatemala has died from dehydration and shock while in Border Patrol custody, according to a new report Thursday. The child, whose name has not been released, was detained last week after illegally crossing the border to New Mexico with her father and more than 100 other migrants, The Washington Post reported. Eight hours after she was detained, she reportedly began having seizures. Emergency responders found that she “reportedly had not eaten or consumed water for several days," according to the Post's review of Customs and Border Patrol records. The girl was flown to an El Paso hospital and initially revived, but went into cardiac arrest and died less than 24 hours later.

My Republican Party, then, seems to no longer represent or serve the interests of the 19th District, Johnson County, or the State of Kansas," she wrote.

But she continued to repeat a lie, insisting that the administration has never had a "family separation policy." Instead, as she has repeatedly and condescendingly argued, she holds that the administration's policies practice of taking children away from parents was demanded by laws Congress had already passed, not anything the executive branch actively did.

This argument is at best semantic wordplay — more accurately, it's gross deception. As many have pointed out, the administration intentionally and clearly adopted a new policy in the past year of "zero tolerance" that automatically entailed separating families who were accused of crossing the border illegally. Officials, including former DHS Secretary John Kelly and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions, made clear that separating families was the point — to create a deterrent effect.

Nielsen claimed that the administration didn't have a policy of family separations because it didn't separate every immigrant family — but that's as absurd as claiming that a government doesn't have an education policy because not every child goes to public school..

A Minnesota mother is advocating for lower insulin prices after she said her 26-year-old son died because he couldn’t afford the cost. Nicole Smith-Holt told CBS News in a report published on Friday that her son, Alec, was a Type 1 diabetic, which meant he needed to take daily doses of insulin in order to survive.  But when he turned 26, his monthly payment reportedly skyrocketed to $1,300 because the drug could no longer be covered by his parents’ insurance.  That’s when Smith-Holt said her son, without her knowledge, began to ration his insulin to get by. Shortly after, she said, her son fell into a diabetic coma while he was alone in his apartment and later died.

A federal judge has found four women guilty of entering a national wildlife refuge without a permit as they sought to place food and water in the Arizona desert for migrants. US magistrate Judge Bernardo Velasco’s ruling on Friday marked the first conviction against humanitarian aid volunteers in a decade. The four found guilty of misdemeanours in the recent case were volunteers for No More Deaths, which said in a statement the group had been providing life-saving aid to migrants.

Cabeza Prieta national wildlife refuge, which includes 56 miles of Sonoran Desert along the US-Mexico border, is a stunningly beautiful wilderness. There are saguaros, endangered Sonoran pronghorn, petroglyphs, and jagged mountain ranges. It is also where in the past year alone, humanitarian workers have discovered the bodies of 32 people. 

On 17 January, No More Deaths released a report documenting the systematic destruction by border patrol of water and food supplies left in the desert for migrants. Over a nearly four-year period, 3,856 gallons of water had been destroyed. The report linked to video showing border patrol kicking over gallons and pouring them out onto the ground. Hours after the report was released, Scott Warren, a volunteer with No More Deaths, was arrested and charged with a felony for harboring migrants after Border Patrol allegedly witnessed him giving food and water to two migrants in the west desert near Cabeza Prieta. If convicted, he could face five years in prison.
