How to achieve better relations with Russia

From a former US ambassador:

• Unite the US government (Trump does exactly the opposite, having most of his government against him).
  
• Unite NATO (Trump does exactly the opposite)
  
• Apply leverage to Russia (Trump does exactly the opposite)
  

On the latter point, for instance Trump wants to cooperate with Russia to bring a solution to the Syria problem, but as he wants to leave Syria altogether, he's not producing any leverage over Russia, quite the contrary.
