A cardiologist who treated former President George H.W. Bush was killed Friday morning in a bicycle-to-bicycle drive-by shooting near Texas Medical Center in Houston, authorities said. Dr. Mark Hausknecht and the shooter were both riding bikes on South Main Street, near Texas Children's Pavilion for Women, shortly before 9 a.m. local time, Executive Assistant Police Chief Troy Finner said at a news conference. Hausknecht, 65, was biking north when he passed the shooter going in the other direction, Finner said. The shooter turned, fired two shots at Hausknecht and rode away on his bike, Finner said.

A shooting in February scarred Elama Ali. Another this month took her father's life. When an armed teen burst into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High, moving through the school and mowing down students and teachers, Elama took cover. Seventeen people were killed, but she -- and her brother -- survived the Valentine's Day massacre in Parkland, Florida. Like many survivors, she resolved to do something about it. This week, the violence that turned Elama and her friends into activists for gun reform visited again. And this time, it claimed her father. Ayub Ali was shot and killed Tuesday in a robbery at his convenience store. "The reason we moved to Parkland was because he liked the school," Elama told CNN on Friday. "I didn't want to move here. But he told us, 'We are only moving because the school is amazing.'"

But you won't hear it on the right-wing media, there victims only count when they get shot by an Islamic terrorist or an illegal immigrant.

An armed man in Florida allegedly provoked an argument over a parking spot before shooting and killing an unarmed man. Michael Drejka, 47, will not face charges due to the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law after shooting dead 28-year-old Markeis McGlockton in front of his five-year-old son and girlfriend in Clearwater on Thursday. Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri announced the decision during a news conference on Friday:

“I don’t make the law. I enforce the law. The law in the state of Florida today is that people have a right to stand their ground and have a right to defend themselves when they believe that they are in harm.”

According to the sheriff’s office, 24-year-old Britany Jacobs, McGlockton’s girlfriend, was parked in a handicapped spot when she was approached by Drejka. The sheriff’s office described what occurred next in a statement:

“According to witnesses, McGlockton exited the store and walked over to Drejka who was still arguing with Jacobs in the parking lot. Witnesses say McGlockton forcibly pushed Drejka causing Drejka to fall to the ground. Witnesses told detectives that Drejka was on the ground when he took out a handgun and fired one single round at McGlockton striking him in the chest.”

Store owner Ali Selous told WFTS-TV that McGlockton was buying candy for his son at the time of the incident:

“[It’s] sad to see [McGlockton] die in front of his son. … For a parking lot [space]. For a stupid reason. Just to argue, just to find someone to argue with.”

Social media users pointed out the absurdity of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which has been shown to increase homicides:

Last year, 3,493 children were either killed or injured by gun violence, according to the Gun Violence Archive, and 665 of them were 11 years old or younger. Every year, over 3,300 Texans are killed or injured by firearms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This year alone, at least 50 children have already been killed or injured by guns..
