Quote:White House press secretary Sarah Sanders dismissed a question from a reporter on Friday about whether President Trump has any plans to “tone done his rhetoric” after Coast Guard Lt. Christopher Hasson was arrested over an alleged plot to kill journalists and prominent liberals. “I certainly don’t think that the president at any point has done anything but condemn violence, against journalists or anyone else,” Sanders said. But Sanders’s characterization is directly at odds with her boss’s history of routinely making incendiary comments about the media and his political opponents.
In fact, you don’t have to go far back in history to find footage of the president explicitly encouraging violence against reporters. In one of the most dramatic examples, Trump literally celebrated a lawmaker for assaulting a reporter. The moment is memorable for its egregiousness, even by Trump-era standards. At a political rally last October, Trump boosted Rep. Greg Gianforte (R-MT) for assaulting Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs while Jacobs attempted to interview him in 2017. Jacobs was attempting to ask Gianforte about his response to a government report on health care when Gianforte grabbed Jacobs’s recorder and pushed Jacobs to the ground. Gianforte later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault. But instead of condemning Gianforte’s behavior, Trump praised him. “Any guy that can do a body slam, he’s my kinda guy,” Trump said, before going on to mimic a body slam while the crowd cheered.

Quote:Secretary of State Mike Pompeo allegedly verbally harassed an NPR reporter for having the audacity to ask him about his leadership ... of the State Department. During a Friday interview with Pompeo on US policy toward Iran, All Things Considered host Mary Louise Kelly asked the secretary of state whether he owed an apology to Marie Yovanovitch. Yovanovitch is the former US ambassador to Ukraine who was subjected to a smear campaign led by Rudy Giuliani and was unceremoniously removed from her post in April, bringing an abrupt end to her 33-year career as a foreign service officer.

Quote:President Donald Trump issued a veiled threat against National Public Radio on Sunday morning, just days after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo went on an expletive-filled rant at an NPR reporter that she revealed to the public afterward. On Sunday, the president retweeted Fox News host Mark Levin who argued, “Why does NPR still exist? We have thousands of radio stations in the U.S. Plus Satellite radio. Podcasts. Why are we paying for this big-government, Democrat Party propaganda operation.” To which the president added, “A very good question!”

Quote:Fox News host Steve Hilton called Mike Pompeo a "baby" and a "bully" Sunday night after the secretary of State reportedly lashed out at an NPR host. "Secretary of State Mike Pompeo got into an ugly dust up with an NPR reporter this week and I've got something I want to get off my chest," Hilton said on his program, "The Next Revolution." "First, I want to make clear I'm a big fan of the secretary. I appreciate his tough stand on many issues, not least China," Hilton said. "I listen to NPR a lot and I can tell you that Mary Louise Kelly is one of the very few hosts on there who actually seems fair and is not totally biased against President Trump," the host later said.

Quote:The State Department has removed an NPR reporter from a group of journalists traveling this week to Europe and Central Asia with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, days after Pompeo publicly feuded with the news outlet following a tense interview. An organization representing correspondents covering the State Department made the announcement in a statement on Monday. The group says it believes the removal of Michele Kelemen from the press pool was a response to the flare-up between Pompeo and her NPR colleague Mary Louise Kelly. “We can only conclude that the State Department is retaliating against National Public Radio as a result of this exchange,” Shaun Tandon, president of the State Department Correspondents' Association, said in the statement.

Quote:President Trump on Thursday lashed out at reporters who questioned a report from the Department of Homeland Security that suggested the new coronavirus can be suppressed by heat and humidity. "I'm the president and you're fake news,” Trump told Washington Post reporter Philip Rucker at a White House press briefing. And you see the numbers. That’s it, that’s all I have. I’m just here to present talent. I’m here to present ideas.” When asked by the president, Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus task force coordinator, said she was unaware of sunlight being an efficient tool against any virus.
Trump was asked by another reporter if he was aware of the medical status of Kim Jong UN after CNN reported this week that the North Korean leaders was in poor medical condition after a surgery. Before Trump responded to the question, he touted the close relationship he has with Kim as opposed to other administrations. "I think the report was incorrect,” he said of CNN’s article. “I think the report was done by a network was incorrect. I’m hearing they used old documents ... I hope it was an incorrect report.” When asked by a CNN reporter if he has had any contact with Kim he declined to answer. “CNN is fake news, don’t talk to me,” he said when she asked a follow up question.

Quote:The top Democrat and Republican lawmakers with oversight of the U.S. Agency for Global Media on Tuesday criticized a move by the agency’s head Michael Pack to rescind a firewall safeguard that protects the organization’s journalists and broadcasts from political influence. In separate statements, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Michael McCaul (Texas), the ranking Republican, criticized Pack for being “opposed to journalistic objectivity.” “Mr. Pack has taken his rampage on America’s international broadcasting to another level,” Engel said in a statement. “He’s trying to tear down the legally mandated firewall that protects USAGM broadcasters from outside interference. But Congress created that firewall by law and although Mr. Pack can huff and puff, he can’t blow that wall down. The rule he rescinded yesterday clarified the legal protections. The firewall remains.” The criticism follows an announcement late Monday from Pack, who was appointed by President Trump, that he had rescinded the “fire-wall rule”, codified in U.S. law to protect the professional independence and integrity of journalists and broadcasters.
