Jeff Sessions seems keen to reactivate the already failed ‘war on drugs.’ Incarceration has increased five fold since 1972 while drug consumption hasn’t declined at all.
What is has caused is making it difficult for people to attain a college degree, as they often lose financial assistance.
With less education and stigmatized, they are also much more difficult to employ.
This actually neatly explains a big part of the decline in labor market participation of the male population of working age which Conservatives are keen to blame on Obama.
In the meantime, another war on drugs should be waged, one produced by loose regulation which has enabled legitimate companies to start the worst drug epidemic in the nation’s history.
Not only is the government not doing anything about that, its healthcare reform will make life much harder for the victims.
