Local paper the Bristol Post noticed that whenever they posted articles covering Thunberg’s work, they were inundated with negative comments. They decided to take matters into their own hands having seen a worrying rise in threatening or violent comments about the teen activist on Facebook. The paper then named and shamed several of the people who had made such comments about Thunberg. Some of these people were parents of grandparents themselves. Others had stickers on their profile pictures imploring people to “be kind” – a mantra that has become popular on social media following the death of TV presenter Caroline Flack. 

To give you a rough idea of the comments, here’s a selection of some that were linked to specific Facebook users by the Bristol paper. Crush the b***h. Sounds good to me. Send her home Her parents need to slap her with a brick. She should be burnt at the stake! Can someone grab her pigtails and ms trunchable her over the fence It seems ridiculous that this even needs to be said, but a young woman should obviously be able to make her voice heard without being threatened with physical violence by strangers online.

And then this:

An explicit cartoon of 17-year-old Greta Thunberg being raped has been spotted with the branding of a Canadian oil company on it. According to HuffPost Canada, the sticker was found by Alberta citizen Michelle Narang, who despite being a supporter of the oil and gas industry, felt compelled to post an image of the sticker on Facebook criticising its existence. The sticker was allegedly being handed out at job sites to be worn on hard hats, and was circulating among X-Site Energy Services employees last week with the knowledge of one of the managers. Said manager reportedly responded to the complaint by saying that Thunberg "wasn't a child"... which seems somewhat irrelevant. Thunberg responded in her characteristically measured way, tweeting that this shows she and her cause are winning.

A German teenager dubbed the “anti-Greta” – climate sceptics’ answer to the schoolgirl activist Greta Thunberg – is set to address the biggest annual gathering of US grassroots conservatives. Naomi Seibt, 19, who styles herself as a “climate sceptic” or “climate realist”, will this week address the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) near Washington, joining speakers including Donald Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence. Seibt is in the pay of the Heartland Institute, a thinktank closely allied with the White House that denies established science showing humans are heating the planet with dangerous consequences.
